Officials
Grand Rapids Area Soccer Club (GRASC) is proud to partner with The Third Team, Northern Minnesota’s trusted leader in referee education, development, and support.
Whether you're a brand-new referee or looking to continue your officiating journey, The Third Team provides the training and resources needed to get certified and feel confident on the field. Through this partnership, GRASC helps connect referees with local game assignments, ongoing mentorship, and a supportive community.
Ages
Referees must be 13 years or older to become certified through U.S. Soccer. Many of our officials are youth players, siblings, and local soccer fans who want to stay involved in the game while earning some extra money.
When
Referees typically work during the spring, summer, and early fall, with most matches scheduled weeknights and occasional weekends. You choose your availability, and we assign games based on your schedule and experience level.
Where
Most matches take place at local fields in the Grand Rapids area, including our GRASC home fields and nearby AYSA clubs when needed. Travel is minimal and usually optional for younger referees.
Practices
Referees don't attend team practices, but we do offer referee clinics, online modules, and mentorship opportunities throughout the season to build confidence and skills. New referees are always supported on and off the field!
Matches
Referees are assigned to matches appropriate to their age, certification level, and experience. You'll typically start with U8–U10 games and grow into center referee and assistant referee roles for older age groups.
Uniforms
All referees must wear the standard U.S. Soccer referee uniform, which includes a referee jersey, black shorts, black socks, and black shoes. If you're new, we can help you order an affordable starter kit.
Extra Costs
In addition to the certification course fee, referees are responsible for purchasing their uniform and whistle kit. GRASC may offer reimbursement or partial stipends for returning referees—just ask!

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do referees get paid?
Referee pay varies based on the age group and whether you're serving as the center or assistant referee. Most games pay $20–$50 per match, and payments are issued on a regular basis throughout the season. It’s a fun and flexible way to earn money—especially for teens who love soccer!
